Shoot the Moon…

February 7th, 2009 | Denver, colorado

The Chamberlain Observatory telescope, a 20 inch Clark Saegmuller refractor, was among the largest of its kind at the time of construction. This telescope first saw light in 1894 and is still in use today. The observatory has a great feel of antiquity, but in a good way. It made me nostalgic for the heavens that I had never been to.

Beautiful. There is quite something about the optics of the turn of the century. The brass and enamel bring something wonderful to the touch and eye.

I would have to agree with you. There is something about the way things were made in earlier times. The best way for me to describe that “something” is that many things from that era were made to feel good in your hands or to the touch…it was solid, seemed well balanced, and managed to delight your senses somehow. Much of today’s stuff is made with consideration as to how it will ship (some assembly required), or how it will look in a package, and how soon it will break so they can get you to buy a new one.

Plastics, combined with capitalism, ruined everything,
